Plans are underway for the new meeting place, (we'll keep you posted) but in the meantime I'd like to remind you that there is a group that meets in Duncan during the last Sunday of every month . . 1-3:00 PM
Here are the details from fellow trader Bev Koski on how to get there . . .

2288 Cowichan Bay Road – the property of Beverlee and Jack McLeod

Heading north on the highway about 3 km before Duncan and just before the Cowichan Golf Club, watch for Bench Road.

Turn right onto Bench Road and follow it to Cowichan Bay Rd., which is at the bottom of the hill. Turn left onto Cowichan Bay Rd.

and look for 2288 on the left. The driveway is just before the fences of the South Cowichan Lawn Tennis Club. Drive

over a small private bridge and keep to the right. The house is on the left, but you need to head for Bev’s studio on the right.

It is upstairs over a double carport, part of a large detached building. If lost, phone 250-748-4492.

This is not my property, but Beverlee has attended ATCs at Jeff & Virginia Errick’s and is keen to have any and all

of you attend our sessions: the last Sunday of every month from 1 to 3 PM.

Vancouver 2010 ATCs

In 2010 Vancouver will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Vancouver Artist Trading Card Group will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a giant ATC exhibition and trading session. All the cards received will be exhibited in March 2010 and traded on the closing night of the show.

Suggested themes: friendship, solidarity, peace, fair play, optimism, inspiration and empowerment. Other possible themes include “personal best” or “10″.

To enter: Submit 9 standard size ATCs in a clear 9 card sleeve. Include a self addressed return mailing label and $3 (CANADIAN postage, US currency) or an International Reply Coupon.

The exhibit is open to anyone from any part of the world. All cards will be traded at the end of the show (March 21, 2010) and each participant (who includes funds for return postage as specified above) will receive 9 assorted cards in return.

Artist Trading Card Exhibition

Why are you giving it away? When first introduced to Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), the prospect of giving away an original artwork is a difficult concept for a lot of people. However, ATCs function as much more than just an artwork. They are a reminder that art is a process to be enjoyed, rather than how much an artwork is worth in dollars. ATCs require a smaller time investment compared to a large artwork yet the process often leads to new experiments or ideas. The ability to discuss your works face-to-face with other artists is an added bonus, receiving instant feedback about your art. Whether ATCs are made for an exhibition or a trading session, the key element is the exchange that takes place between artists. There are no art stars, there is no money involved. You are not giving your art away, but sharing in an exchange. The more you trade, the more you collect artworks, ideas, and contacts.

What are Artist Trading Cards? Artist Trading Cards are works of art measuring 2 ½" x 3 ½" (64 x 89 cm) that are made for trading with others. This art movement began in the 1990s in Switzerland, and has since spread all over the world. There are no restrictions on materials or subject matter, only these basic rules: ATCs must be 2 ½" x 3 ½", ATCs are NEVER sold but only traded, trade only the cards you have made yourself, and sign the back of each card with your name and/or contact information. Most Artist Trading Cards are original works of art, but they may also comprise small editions or a series.

A very important element of Artist Trading Cards is the actual trading, whether this occurs face-to-face or through the mail. Trading generates a social component where interaction and the opportunity to view different artistic styles is a key part of the process. Trading artworks also maintains the anti-commercial, non-judgemental sensibility first promoted by ATC originators, who believe art should be inclusive and free to everyone. This is especially true when trading through the mail, as you never know what you will receive.

The Richmond Art Gallery’s 4th Annual Artist Trading Card Exhibition is a display of Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) from local, national, and international participants. Since 2006, their Annual ATC Exhibition has included hands-on workshops, trading sessions, and artist talks scheduled throughout the exhibition. The closing party for the exhibit has become one of the Lower Mainland’s largest annual ATC Trading Sessions, and is a great introduction to the fun of artistic exchange!

Join this exciting art movement by creating some Artist Trading Cards for the Fourth Annual ATC Exhibition, or visit the Richmond Art Gallery from September 18 – October 30 to view the exhibition. Enter before September 4, 2009. Everyone is invited to participate, and all art techniques/media are welcome.

The RAG’s 4th Annual Artist Trading Card Exhibition is a display of Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) from local, national, and international participants. Everyone is invited to participate, and all techniques and mediums are welcome. ATCs must be original artworks*, and may be in a series, edition or multiple. Please “sign” the back, and contact information may also appear on the back of each card if desired. ATCs will be traded on the closing night of the exhibition.

*Please note that digital works will only be traded with other digital works

How to Enter:

Send in 9 Artist Trading Cards in a standard 9-sleeve plastic sheet (9 cards per sheet). Cards will be displayed in the plastic sheets. Cards must be sized to fit into standard plastic sleeves (designed for hockey/baseball cards), and each measure 2 ½” x 3 ½” in order to qualify. All works received that follow this criteria will be exhibited. Please sign the back of each ATC and include your city/town so that others will know whom they have traded with. Include a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope to the Richmond Art Gallery.**

**USA participants please send $2 in US funds for return postage. International Artists please include a Postal Money Order or International Reply Coupon for return postage purchase.

Next Art Trading Card Event - Thursday, February 26th from 7-8pm

Come down to the Campbell River Art Gallery on February 26th and join a group of people who love to make and trade “art cards”. What’s it all about? This is a fun, social and creative program that meets on a Thursday of every third month to swap trading cards. The only difference between these and sports trading cards is that you create your own homemade 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch trading card. Your cards can be painted, collaged, mixed media, photographs, three dimensional shapes, or found objects. There are no rules. It's up to you what you want to make. Sign the back as you would any art work and add contact info if you wish. Bring along about 20 cards to trade on a one-to-one basis with other participants. Artist trading cards are unique in that they cannot be sold only traded. People are trading them worldwide. Drop in to see what the fun is all about. All ages are encouraged to participate.

Back in 2002, the Campbell River Art Gallery was the first location in British Columbia to start the art trading card program. Originally, the concept was started in 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland . The first Canadian artist trading card session, lead by Chuck Stake (aka artist Don Mabie), took place at The New Gallery in Calgary, followed by sessions at the Alberta College of Art and Design. His partner, Wendy Toogood, introduced the program during her exhibition at the Campbell River Art Gallery and our Art Trading Card program began. Come out for the next event on Thursday, February 26th from 7-8pm and see what the fun is all about. The Gallery is located at 1235 Shoppers Row (same building as the Visitor Info Centre). Closing Celebration and Trading Session:
Friday 14 November 2008 from 7:00 8:30pm

The RAG’s 3rd Annual ATC Exhibition is a display of Artist Trading Cards from local, national, and international participants. This year the exhibition will include workshops, trading sessions, artist talks, and a closing celebration/trading session. All contributors will receive a copy of the show poster featuring one of their works.
What Are ATCs? Artist Trading Cards are miniature works of art measuring 2.5” x 3.5” that are made to trade. ATCs are intended to be a non-commercial, non-hierarchical avenue for artistic exchange. Cards are traded one for one, and everyone is invited to participate. For more information on the history and making of ATCs, please visit http://www.richmondartgallery.org/atcs/atc.php.
2008 ATC Exhibition Theme:
ATCs will be on display alongside the exhibitions MARGINALIA: Getting Out of the House by Margaret Dragu and Pam Hall, and Patron Saint of Waterskiers by Emily Rosamond.

In conjunction with these exhibitions, ATC submissions should reflect one or more of the following themes which relate to the works of Dragu & Hall, and Rosamond:

How To Enter: Send in 9 or 18 regular sized Artist Trading Cards (2.5” x 3.5”) in a standard 9-sleeve plastic sheet (9 cards per sheet) with a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope to the Richmond Art Gallery. Please sign the back of each ATC.
Please indicate if you would like to have your cards traded for you. Traded cards will be returned to you in the SASE you have provided. All trading of cards in the exhibition will take place on the closing night, 14 November 2008.

It is with a heavy heart that I report the loss of our dear friend Andrea Marrs. Andi passed away last night after a very courageous fight. We were blessed to have her for these past months. Her generosity of spirit and gentleness has been a true inspiration. I will miss my friend.
